Live resin vs. distillate: what actually matters

Walk down the vape section and you will see two words over and over: distillate and live resin. They describe how the oil was made, and the difference is easier to understand than the marketing suggests.

Distillate is cannabis extract stripped down to near-pure cannabinoid. The process is efficient and produces a consistent, very potent, essentially flavourless oil. Because the aromatics are removed, most distillate products add terpenes back in afterwards — sometimes cannabis-derived, often botanical.

Live resin starts from flower that is frozen immediately after harvest rather than dried and cured. Freezing preserves the volatile aromatic compounds that normally evaporate, so the finished extract keeps the original cultivar's terpene profile. It usually tests lower in THC than distillate and tastes dramatically more like the plant it came from.

Which one is right depends on what you want. Distillate is predictable, affordable, and strong. Live resin is expressive, more expensive, and much closer to the flower experience. Neither is a higher grade than the other in any objective sense.

One practical note: live resin is more sensitive to heat and light. Store it upright, away from a sunny windowsill, and use it within a few months rather than saving it for a year.
